HOSTELS
OF EUROPE |
Hostels
of Europe represents 300+ quality
Independent Hostels throughout continental
Europe, the UK and Ireland. These hostels
offer quality, budget accommodation for
backpackers, families, students and budget
travelers, in all locations throughout
Europe.
What are Hostels? Hostels are essentially a form of accommodation, which bridge the gap
between hotels and Bed and Breakfasts. Usually they cater to backpackers, travelers on a budget
but many also have facilities for groups, families and those with special needs. Classifying
hostels is difficult as there are many types but the essential ingredients that typify most are
cheap, basic beds or rooms, fun atmosphere and facilties (kitchens, restaurants, bars, tours,
bike rentals etc.)
Independent Hostels vs. Associated Hostels The rise of budget travel has lead to Independent
Hostels opening in almost every popular location in Europe. These hostels tend to have more facilities,
better room options and a more local atmosphere. Most backpackers head first to the Independents as
they do no require memberships, have fewer (usually no) restrictions, and are places where you can
relax and enjoy the company of fellow travelers. Associated Hostels belong to the Hostelling International
(HI), in which normally a membership is required to stay, or an extra charge is levied for non-members.
Most HI hostels require you to have, or rent, a sleep sheet and bedding and most have restrictions like
lockouts during the day and early curfews.
The Hostels of Europe Card is not a membership card, but offers discounts between 5-30% off of the
nightly rates. Memberships are assigned to individuals: each person must have a valid Hostels of Europe
Card in order to receive any discounts. The card is valid from the date of purchase for one year. A map
of Europe with accommodation listing is provided with each card.
Commonly Asked Questions:
Do I need a membership? Only if you plan to stay at a Hostelling International (HI) hostel. In
almost all locations you will find an Independent Hostel.
Are There Any Age Restrictions? Some hostels cater to students and may not be suitable if you
are looking for a quiet, restful retreat. 99% of the Hostels of Europe network accepts travelers of
all ages. If you would like more information, please email the hostel for its rules or check the
Hostels of Europe website.
Can Families with young children stay at hostels? Yes, almost all Independent Hostels have rooms
with 2, 3, or 4 beds suitable for families. Hostels which specifically cater to families are found in the
Hostels of Europe website.
Is it really worth getting the discount card? The card is not a requirement to stay at any of the
participating hostels, but if you have it, you get a discount. On average, you only need 4 or 5 nights to
make up what you spent for the card.
$28.50 CAD per card - includes G.S.T.
